How I Maximize My Time For Maximum Professional and Personal Returns by Dr. Sanjay K. Patel, MD

Time management is one of the most difficult skills humans have to master. We all have a million things we have to get done every day, and most of us don’t get them all done. Our smartphones, social media, entertainment and even our family and friends distract us, and make it harder to make progress. I also know that everybody, regardless of where they live, or who they are, lives up to the amount of time they think they have. Even as one of the Managing Directors of Chalak Mitra Group of Companies, I still find it difficult, at times, to manage my time. However, I am continually working to improve my time management skills and I think you should too.

Perception of Time

When you were in school, or college, and your teacher assigned a paper that was due in two weeks, did you start working on it right away? My guess is, you probably didn’t. Two weeks sounds like an immense amount of time, especially when you’re young. Most of you waited until the last possible minute to get started, yet you completed the work on time. That kind of thinking is common in the business world as well.

Rather than working on that proposal now that the client will need tomorrow afternoon at three, you tell yourself that you’ll have time to get it done by tomorrow. Besides, you don’t have time to get to it today, because you’re attempting to finish all the projects you procrastinated on earlier in the day, or week. Remember that your perception of time may be skewed and procrastination only makes you work harder later on.

Acting When It’s Time

There’s something oddly motivating about an impending deadline that you may miss. It will get your blood pumping, and you’ll spring into action. Whether you have an hour, or five minutes, you’ll accomplish everything that you need to and make it to that meeting on time. The whole time, your stress levels go up and you think less clearly. You’re likely to make more mistakes, which could result in losing the deal or angering a client.

When you learn to manage your time wisely, you will find that you are in this frantic position less often. What’s more, the quality of your work will vastly improve if you plan ahead, rather than react at the last minute. The time to act is always now. If you are handed a project today, get started on it immediately and work diligently at it. The thrill you get from just making the deadline will be replaced with the pride of a job well done.

It’s Not All About Work

Running a medical practice, and working with the Chalak Mitra Group of Companies takes up the majority of my time. I spend Mondays with the other managing directors at CMG, mostly in meetings. Many times, I’m still at the office at 10 pm. I also run a medical practice Tuesday through Friday, and I’m there from 8 am to around 6 every night. To say the least, I have little time left over at the end of every day. However, I do make time for the things that really matter.

As a family man, I have an obligation to my wife and daughters, as well as to my extended family. There are times that I have to put aside my work, and focus on them, just like any parent. I rearrange my schedule to make sure I can be there when they need me. We take vacations together, and spend quality time whenever we can. It’s incredibly important for me and for them. There are certainly sacrifices, for instance, I may not be able to watch a game when I want. But, ultimately, I make time for what is important to me, and you should too.

Whether you’re a high-level executive, or a busboy in a restaurant, you must get a handle on your time management. When you do, you will notice an immediate and dramatic change in your productivity and the quality of your work. What’s more, you’ll be able to spend more time enjoying your hobbies, and the company of loved ones. That, my friend, will help you become a balanced, happy person.
